The Kentucky Color Guard Sheet is a collaboration of over 25 volunteers consisting of Kentucky band directors, color guard instructors, adjudicators and the staff at kyband.com. It was created during the winter and spring of 2011, there was a major update again in 2017 and then this current version was completed in May 2022. This sheet is not an attempt to standardize judging or to create a standardized sheet. This form was originally designed using a format, similar to the Kentucky (KMEA) band judge’s sheet. Kyband.com has had numerous requests from band directors and contest hosts requesting a “KMEA style color guard judging sheet similar to the percussion sheet on the website.” The content of the sheet was determined by examples of sheets provided by DCI, WGI, BOA and other independent sheets that have been collected. During the construction the sheet was presented in several stages to our group of volunteers for their input. We do want to thank them and all of the volunteers that were involved in the project.
The Kentucky Format Percussion Evaluation Form was updated to the current version in May 2022. Several weeks have gone into the preparation of this sheet. Although this sheet is not officially endorsed by any organization and is ultimately a product of the kyband.com website, we did solicit input from over 30 percussion instructors from Kentucky including members of the Percussive Arts Society Kentucky Chapter Executive Committee, Percussion Professors from Kentucky Universities, Kentucky High School Band Directors and High School Percussion Instructors. This form includes the traditional captions and sub-captions of most common percussion assessment sheets. It was also designed to encourage the adjudicator to consider the front ensemble during all stages of the assessment. An additional feature of this sheet is the ability to reward those sections that march field percussion without penalizing groups that have chosen to ground their entire percussion ensemble. I would like to thank the many percussionists that contributed to this project. I would like say a special thank you to Chris Teesdale and John Willmarth for assistance with terminology, layout and proof reading of the original version of this sheet. Also, thank you to Dr. John Stroube for providing the original templates starting in 2008. The original version of this sheet was created in 2008 using the KMEA template. It was updated in May 2011, April 2015, August 2017 and again in May 2022 to the current version.
This sheet will be similar in many ways to others that you may already be using. The primary difference will be layout, presentation, color, etc. The sheets that will be used at contests will ultimately be determined by the hosts, and as in any case the outcome of a contest will be determined by the adjudicator not the sheet. This sheet is not endorsed by KMEA or any other association.
