Question: I was in marching band from 97-01. When
I was in band the drum majors were judged as well as the band. My
question is when and why did that stop? |

Answer: Captions awards such as Percussion or Color
Guard are at the discretion of the local band festivals. KMEA has
never required that they be adjudicated. KMEA's only requirement was
that IF an award was going to be presented, that the contest should
provide a qualified individual to judge those particular captions.
KMEA rules do state " Other awards may be given at the option of the
host. However, it is felt by KMEA that a band should be viewed as a
total unit and that other awards may tend to fragment the overall
unity of the band (see Section II.A.3). Drum majors may be evaluated
but not ranked or scored." This rule has been in effect for several
years. |
