In 2011 you will notice some changes in scoring for KMEA sanctioned marching contest. In the Spring of 2011 the KMEA State Marching Band Committee introduced the KMEA Marching Band Adjudicators Manual. This manual contains instructions for judges of KMEA contests. It includes the new judging sheets that now have a 200 point scale. It also includes a new KMEA STANDARDIZED PROGRESSION SCORING CHART. Information on that chart is listed below.

“In an effort to provide for consistency of scoring throughout the marching band season, KMEA provides a standardize progression scoring chart. The chart displays a suggested range of scores that increases weekly culminating at KMEA State Championships. This chart can be used to monitor the level of achievement and progress throughout the season. Adjudicators can use the chart as a reference to manage scoring more effectively.”

These are the ranges of scores suggested by KMEA for each of the weeks.

Week 1 Band Scores Range from 60-130
Week 2 Band Scores Range from 70–140
Week 3 Band Scores Range from 80–150
Week 4 Band Scores Range from 90–160
Week 5 Band Scores Range from 100–170
Week 6 Band Scores Range from 110–180

Regionals and State Championships Scores Range from 110–200

Additional information on the new sheets and scoring system is available at http://kyband.com/home/articles/how-kmea-marching-band-contest-are-judged/

Along with the California State University Wind Symphony, the Madisonville North Hopkins High School Symphonic Band has been selected as the Feature Showcase Ensemble at the New York Wind Band Festival held in Carnegie Hall. Six select high school bands (including the Madisonville North Hopkins High School Concert Band) will perform in an adjudicated Festival on Sunday afternoon, February 26, 2012. On Sunday evening all performing high school groups will return to the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie hall to hear the two featured Showcase ensembles after which an awards presentation will occur. Only six bands are admitted to the festival each year and are selected based on a nomination to apply from the World Projects Board of Directors. The Board then reviews each application and audition tape and invites 6 groups to participate. In years past, the Feature Showcase Ensembles have been college or university wind ensembles or symphonic bands. The Madisonville North Hopkins Symphonic Band is the first high school ensemble to be selected to perform as a Feature Showcase Ensemble.
