Friends and colleagues,
It is my sincere pleasure to invite you and your band to the 2nd annual Spirit of the Valley Invitational marching band contest on October 7th, 2017 on the campus of Hardin Valley Academy. We are working hard to provide a contest experience that will build your students’ confidence as well as give you valuable feedback to take with you into the closing weeks of the marching season.
We have assembled a highly qualified and talented panel of adjudicators who will evaluate your ensemble using the Tennessee Bandmasters’ Association score sheets. Ensembles will be evaluated in the areas of music ensemble, music effect, visual ensemble, visual effect, percussion, color guard, and drum major. In addition to recorded feedback and scores, you and your staff will have the opportunity to attend critique with the adjudicators. This is a great chance to discuss potential methods of improving your program as you begin to make the final push of the marching band season.
In addition to an outstanding performance experience, we will offer all of the traditional amenities for directors and staff, including an excellent hospitality room and director area. Our concession stand will be fully stocked, including an option to pre-order meals for your students so that they can eat at your convenience without having to stand in long lines or be in a rush to get ready for performance time. For those of you who may not have been there before, Hardin Valley is a short drive from both interstates running through Knoxville, and is a convenient trip for most bands in the region.
I hope that you will consider joining us for this event. If there is anything I can do to make this opportunity easier or more beneficial for your program, please don’t hesitate to let me know. In the meantime, I wish you all the best and hope to hear from you soon!

Spirit of the Valley Invitational Contest Procedures October 7th, 2017
We will utilize a seven judge panel comprised of talented individuals who are active judges in the southeast as well as nationally. We are committed to making the quality of our adjudicators one of the hallmarks of our event. Bands will be evaluated in the captions of music ensemble, music effect, visual ensemble, visual effect, percussion, color guard, and drum major. The percussion, color guard, and drum major judges will score those sections within their caption, but these scores will not affect the overall band score or placement. Score sheets, criteria, and scoring information can be found on the Tennessee Bandmasters’ Association website at: http://www.
Competitive classification will be determined by a band’s total number of performers, including percussion, color guard, auxiliary, and drum majors. An ensemble may choose to perform in a higher class but not in a lower one.
A: 1-40 performers
AA: 41-80 performers
AAA: 81-120 performers
AAAA: 121+ performers
We plan to utilize a prelims/finals format this year to allow groups more performance opportunities and the opportunity to get more feedback from the adjudicators. Details regarding finals procedures will be determined once we have a better idea of how many bands will be attending. All class awards will be given at the conclusion of prelims, with finals consisting of an open competition between all finalists regardless of class. If desired, a band may elect to perform in prelims only, but this decision will need to be made prior to the day of the contest.
